2012 Youth of the Year

Selected among several local outstanding youth, Sonja Merrie’ Floyd was named 2012 Youth of the Year for Oprah Winfrey Boys & Girls Club of Kosciusko & Attala County. Floyd will compete against other Boys & Girls Club members for the Mississippi Youth of the Year title and a $1,000 college scholarship from Tupperware Brands Corporation. Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive. Floyd is among hundreds of local Youth of the Year winners across the country recognized by Boys & Girls Clubs of America for sound character, leadership skills and willingness to give back to the community.
Bio
Sonja Merrie’ Floyd is the daughter of
Cathy and Henry Kimbrough. She has 2 sisters and 1 brother. She is currently a
senior at Kosciusko High School where she has maintained a 3.5 GPA. Her awards
include: Advanced on Biology I, Algebra I, English II, and US History State
Tests. She is a part of the Big Red Band where she serves as the Color guard
Captain. Sonja Merrie’ is a devoted member of Pleasant Hill M.B. Church where
she sings in the choir and serves youth mentor. Sonja has been a part of the Mayor’s Youth
Council, National Council of Negro Women
, and Oprah Winfrey Boys and Girls
Club. She is currently serves as secretary of the OWBGC Keystone Club. Sonja’s interests include: dancing, acting,
attending church, and volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club. Her future goals
are to major in Forensic Science with an emphasis in criminal justice and minor
in Dance Choreography. She has been
accepted to University of Southern Mississippi, Jackson State University, and
University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). She plans to give back to the Boys and
Girls Club through her dedicated service.
